Up till now, I had considered the sun to be a plain old, ordinary star. Now, I've discovered that not only is the sun much more extraordinary than I thought, it's actually pretty interesting. One interesting fact about the sun is that it is 99.8% of the solar systems's mass. The sun, in reality, is humongous, inside it over 1.3 million Earths would fit.

Due to the fact that sun is not a solid body, it rotates differently than Earth. At the equator it rotates once every 25.4 days. while near the poles it's as much as 36 days.

The sun's innermost layer, the core, is 15 millionÂșC which enables nuclear fusion to occur. The energy released from the core as heat and light take a million years to reach the sun's surface.

The next layer is the radiation zone. Because of the radiation zone's density it can take energy 100,000 years to move through it alone. The outermost layer, the corona, extends into space for millions of kilometers and can rarely be seen. It can only be seen if there is a total solar eclipse. The corona emits magnetic energy in the form of solar wind. On the surface of the sun, there are cooler regions called sunspots. Reddish loops of gas called prominences often link different parts of sunspot regions. In turn, when two prominences connect, they release large amounts of magnetic energy, which heats gas on the sun to millions of degrees. This causes an eruption called a solar flare. Solar flares greatly increase the solar wind, which affects us by creating magnficent auroras near the North and South Poles. Low sunspot activity also actuallly affects the Earth, too. Low sunspot activity causes it to get extremely cold here on Earth. The sun now seems like to me a great king, that rules over his solar system with such strange powers... Such mysterious powers, like for example, we still don't know why sunspots are cooler than the rest of the sun's surface, we don't know why sunspot activity affect temperatures on Earth, and we have yet to discover why the corona is much hotter than the photosphere. Despite these mysteries, we wouldn't be able to live without the sun and we can only stand watching in awe as the sun reigns over his lands in magisterial beauty.
