It is believed that studying the behavior of chimpanzees helps us understand evolution. Up till now, barely any research had been done to understand how chimpanzees communicate through facial expressions. Researchers have now discovered that, like humans, chimpanzees can communicate through facial expressions by analyzing different facial movements. Chimps are able to differentiate between similar expressions such as fear and surprise. Chimps, just like us, are able to identify when one expression stops and another starts through minor changes and movements. These findings, to me, aren't really that startling, considering that chimpanzees are humans closest relatives, with only a 1.23% difference between their genetic codes and ours. A little movement can change the whole meaning of an expression, and both humans and chimps are able to distinguish this. Still, this study brings us a bit more closer to our goal on the path of discovering how humans have evolved and it's great that we know a little bit more about our mysterious past.
